No doubt, 3 000 years ago the miners panned the gorge's creek for gold. Now its pools hold gold of a different form, gin-clear water, solitude, the trees, the birds, the orchids, the ferns, the noise and silence of the forest and the glimpse of a bush pig, red duiker, bush buck or guinea fowl, Swainson francolin, and baboons and Monkey’s that make Forest Creek Lodge so special.
Bird watching is amazing; there are many rare species here. We have built a tree house in the riverine forest for bird watching, Pick nicks. It is set high up in the canopy of the large trees and offers superb views of the forest canopy and gorge. Some of the more exotic species of interest to birdwatchers, such as the Knysna loerie, cinnamon dove, grey cuckoo shrike, blue mantled flycatcher, black eagle and the ultimate "tick", the narina trogon, can be seen from our treetop viewing platform or on a "walk and stalk" outing. This interzonal habitat allows tree enthusiasts the opportunity of identifying many uncommon species of trees, shrubs, orchids and ferns.
